Yesterday evening, I released the 0.3 versions of both Maps and Semantic Maps. The documentation has been given a big overhaul, and now contains up to date info about the latest release in a more easy to comprehend format.

This are my blog posts about the changes in this new version:

A list of all changes can be found on the version history pages of Maps and Semantic Maps.

This is the last version I’m creating as part of my Google Summer of Code project, since it ends next Monday. It’s great that so much work has been done, and the extension turned out so well. But at the same time I’m a little sad GSoC is about to end. I had a wonderful time writing Maps and Semantic Maps, and learned a lot of new things, including how open source organizations work, some application architectures and of-course some PHP things I didn’t know yet. Anyway, I’m planning to apply for GSoC 2010 as soon as that’s possible, although I’m not sure for what project and which open source organization.

I’m planning to still get some work done for 0.4, which has currently only custom layer functionality for OpenLayers scheduled. This is a very important to-do though, since it’s in high demand.

I just released Maps and Semantic Maps 0.2. Both the extensions documentation has been updated. I don’t have time to describe any of the improvements made since version 0.1, but the change logs are linked below.

Closely following the initial release of Maps, the first version of Semantic Maps is now publicly available!

Some useful links:

Tomorrow I’ll be announcing both extensions. I can’t wait for the feedback on my work :)

Yes – The moment of the initial Maps release has finally arrived!

All Maps documentation has been updated, and now contains a download link, live demo’s have been added to my on-line dev wiki, and special sandbox pages have also been created.

No announcements about the release will be made untill Semantic Maps 0.1 is also publicly available, which can be expected to be tomorrow :)

MediaWiki logoThe 1st Wiki-Conference New York will be held over the weekend of July 25-26 2009. There will be 2 days of events, held over a weekend in meeting rooms in Vanderbilt Hall at the New York University School of Law, and with activities starting each morning at 10 AM. Yaron Koren, SMW enthusiast and developer of …… a lot … extensions and my GSoC mentor, will be giving a talk about mapping with Semantic Mediawiki, including the upcoming extensions Maps and Semantic Maps I’m developing. By then both the extensions should have had their initial release, and I’m hoping to get some extra feedback and suggestions cause of this :)

Since this is a little far for me I can’t go though :(

I know, It’s out for just over 2 weeks now, but I just noticed.

On June 30th, the PHP development team announced the release of PHP 5.3.0, which features some truly epic new functionality.

It haz namezpacez!!!1!!!!!!1!11!!! Wooot! :D The namespaces are formed a little weird for someone who’s used to .Net and Java, since a backslash ‘\’ is used instead of a dot ‘.’ as separator, and namespaces are only indicated by an opening keyword, not by a container with both start and end like in most other languages. Another nice thing that was added are lambda functions. I actually didn’t know you could not do this in PHP, but now you can, one more sign that PHP is making progress. Hopefully PHP 6 will finally be as nice as languages like Java, and shred the reputation of being a crap language.

I can’t wait for starting to develop with this new version, but will have to wait some more till it’s a little more wildly distributed.
